Conversation 1
和 子 ： 张 老 师 在 家 吗 ？
hé zǐ ：   zhāng lǎo shī zài jiā ma ？
Kako ： Is teacher Zhang in (at home)?

小 英 ： 在 ， 您 是 ？
xiǎo yīng ： zài ， nín shì ？
XiaoYing ： Sure. You are…?

和 子：我 是 张 老 师 的 学 生 ， 我 姓 山 下 ，    我 叫 和 子 。 你 是 ？
hé zǐ ：wǒ shì  hāng lǎo shī de xué  shēng 。 wǒ xìng shān xià ,wǒ jiào hé zǐ 。 nǐ shì ？
Kako ： I am teacher Zhang’s student. My surname is Yamashita, first name is Kako. And you?

小 英 ： 我 叫 小 英 。 张 老 师 是 我爸 爸 。 请 进 。
xiǎo yīng ： wǒ jiào xiǎo yīng 。  zhāng lǎo shī shì wǒ bà ba 。 qǐng jìn 。
XiaoYing ： My name is XiaoYing. Teacher Zhang is my father. Come in please.

和 子 ： 谢 谢 ！
hé zǐ ： xiè xie ！
Kako ： Thanks!

在家 : at home
吗         : question tag
学生 : student
姓         : surname
叫         : be called
爸爸 : father

进         : in, come in
谢谢 : thank you

• “您是…” means “You are…”. It means “Who are you?”. The listener should respond with his name or social status. Such a sentence is used only when a stranger has started to speak to you.
• Caution: “你是谁？” which is also means “Who are you?” is a rather impolite inquiry, so normally one would use “您是…” instead of “你是谁？”
